How the Adjustable Guide Works:

The adjustable guide (often a white bar) slides left or right to run along the folded edge of your fabric. This ensures the needle consistently catches the perfect amount of fabric with each zigzag swing for a precise, even hem. When using your machine's blind hem stitch setting, only one or two threads of the fabric fold are caught by the needle's zigzag, making the stitching almost invisible from the right side. The small metal tongue near the needle slot slightly slackens the stitch as it forms, preventing the hemline from pulling in or puckering.

Using the Foot for Blind Hems:

1. Prepare Hem: Fold hem to desired depth and press. Fold fabric back on itself, leaving 1/4" of hem edge extending
2. Set Machine: Select blind hem stitch on your machine (usually 3-4 straight stitches followed by 1 zigzag)
3. Adjust Guide: Slide adjustable guide so it runs along the folded fabric edge
4. Position Fabric: Place fabric under foot with fold against guide. The zigzag swing should just catch the fold
5. Sew: Stitch, keeping fold against guide. Straight stitches sew on hem edge, zigzag catches fold
6. Unfold: Open fabric—hem is nearly invisible from right side
